Taking inspiration from her time spent studying dairy farming, Finnish sculptor Miina Äkkijyrkkä creates these awe-inspiring monstrous cow sculptures from recycled used cars. The Helsinki-based artist collects old cars from dealers across the country, carefully selecting colorful scrapped vehicles to become part of the sculptural herd.
The award-winning artist has been working with cows and studying art for almost 50 years. It is no wonder then that she has fused both worlds to create these immense scrap metal structures. Miina shapes huge vehicle parts become sections of the cows, arranging their limbs and heads in different positions.
Miina honors the inspiration for her art, paying tribute to her ‘models’ (cows) on her website with a series of photos. She clearly knows the cows inside out: the huge metal sculptures abstractly resemble the living creatures.

In a matter of a few short years, Mac computers have morphed from candy colored bubble into slim, elegant, and noticeably less colorful designs. But the iMacs of yore still have a wonderful charm about them, which is why Jake Harms recycles them into a home furnishing with a cool new use - a home for your fish! Called Macquariums, these translucent Mac shells now host underwater paradises for our scaled Apple enthusiasts.
Harms sources the iMac shells from recyclers for his aquariums, giving new life to the previously obsolete comps. To make them look shiny and new, he then polishes each with a high speed buffer, restoring the bright hues to their original glossy glory. The inner tank follows all of the curvaceous lines of the original iMac, including a curving bubble front that lines up flush with the iMac’s screen, creating a perfect view from the outside. The tanks come in the same vibrant colors as their iMac predecessors- blue, aqua, white, smoke, red, flower power and blue dalmation.
Each Macquarium holds a three gallon tank, which is plenty of room for 1 to 3 dwarf frogs, red claw crabs, fancy guppies or betta fish to swim happily. The fish tank comes with a built in filter and miniature lights that line the “screens,” which creates a dazzling effect at night time. The décor of the interior of the tank is up to you, so feel free to create a colorful scene with brightly colored gravel or plastic plants.

We have all seen satellite images of the Earth before, but Canadian scientist Felix Pharand Deschenes has gone one step further – using data collected through assorted government agencies, he has created a series of stunning scientific illustrations showing the far reach of the planet’s modern technology. In his words: “We see everything from paved and unpaved roads, light pollution, railways, electricity transmission lines, all the way to submarine cables, pipelines, shipping lanes and air traffic.”

This year, Jim Bryson from Quebec takes the pumpkin cake with a giant squash weighing in at almost a ton. The 1,818 pound behemoth has travelled all the way to New York and is now on view at the Botanical Gardens in the Bronx, waiting to be carved into the spookiest zombie creation ever this weekend!
